Knowing your own personality is not only an increasingly popular trend, it actually helps you understand yourself better and aids in the planning of your future career path. Here at SearchAsia, we use the DISC personality test to assess our candidates. Today we shall introduce the 4 DISC personality types to you, and while we are at it, we will be using bird types for you to understand easier. With that, we hope this will help to shed some light in understanding yourself (strengths and weaknesses) and what possible career direction you can take.
D – Dominance (Eagle)
The letter D in DISC stands for dominance personality type, which is represented by the bird type eagle. Eagles are aften referred to as “kings” of the bird species due to their dominance in the birds kingdom. They are often seen hunting alone and swiftly going for the kill. Similar to eagles, individuals with a more dominant personality are highly competitive and feel motivated by winning. They usually look for ways to step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves. It is mainly their strong willpower and fighting spirit that brings them to greater heights. Being results-driven, they are often seen demanding, which may sometimes be hard to work with. Some recommended careers for dominance personality type individuals to consider are property agents, financial consultants and entrepreneurs.
I – Influence (Peacock)
The letter I in DISC stands for influence personality type, which is represented by peacock. Peacocks are probably one of the most attractive bird species in the birds kingdom. They love to be in the centre of attention, often opening their tail feathers to attract the attention of other peacocks. Individuals who have an influential personality (as the name suggests) attract people towards them. They are motivated by recognition, and enjoy working in groups to build relationships with others. People with peacock are often described as affectionate, friendly, talkative, enthusiastic, and attractive. However, they may sometimes be unorganised in their work, causing them to be seen as scattered and messy. If you feel that your dominant personality type is being influential, you can consider taking up sales roles, public relations jobs, product/project management careers or be a marketing professional.
S – Steadiness (Dove)
The letter S in DISC stands for steadiness personality type, which is represented by dove. Doves are shy creatures, often spotted in huge groups no matter where they go. Similarly, people who have a steadiness personality type enjoy working in teams and are more focused on the team’s success than individual success. They are also consistent in the work that they do, which makes them reliable individuals. Steadiness personality types prefer a stable environment to work in. They get tensed and confused when the future is uncertain, and often feel stressed when working in fast-paced environments that are constantly changing. If you are looking for a more stable job, you may consider starting your career in the human resources industry, healthcare sector, social service sector, counselling, or pick up a teaching career.
C – Conscientious (Owl)
Last but not least, the letter C in DISC stands for conscientiousness personality type, which is represented by owl. Owls are sharp creatures as they have acute vision and hearing and are often known to have an inquisitive nature. Like owls, individuals who have a conscientiousness personality type are sharp, analytical, and logical. They tend to back up their findings and information with key data, which leads to accuracy and precision in their work. They are motivated by opportunities to gain knowledge and will take up roles that are able to provide them with the knowledge that they crave for. However, owls are afraid of criticism and being wrong in the work that they do, which may sometimes lead to them being emotional during work. If you have the brain juices to take up analytical jobs, you may consider being an engineer, analyst, scientist, or accountant in your next career.
